Swiss chard, also known as red-stemmed chard (Beta vulgaris), is a colourful leafy vegetable with striking red stems and green leaves. The stems can be cooked like celery or asparagus, while the leaves are suitable for salads, steaming and everyday cooking.
Sow the seeds in rows outdoors from April to July when growing for stems, and until September when growing mainly for leaves. If you want strong stems, thin the seedlings a little more widely to give the plants enough space to develop.
